What is Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Training?

The Saskatoon Institute for Medical Simulation offers Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Training. This course is an advanced, instructor-led classroom course that highlights the importance of team management of a cardiac arrest, team dynamics and communication, systems of care and immediate post-cardiac-arrest care.

This course gives you an opportunity to practice and develop proficiency in resuscitation skills in both team lead and team member roles.

What is included in this course?

The ACLS Full Provider Course is approximately 16 hours in duration, with a small class size. Lunch and coffee/tea/snacks are included.

Specific skills in airway management and related pharmacology are featured. Skills are taught through discussion and group learning, while testing stations offer case-based scenarios using simulators.

Who Should Take an ACLS Course?

The Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Training course is designed for health-care professionals involved in team management of cardiopulmonary arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies.

This includes RN’s, LPN’s, NP’s, Medical Doctors, Primary Care Paramedics, Advanced Care Paramedics, Critical Care Paramedics, Respiratory Therapists, as well as students in the above professions.

If you have responsibilities in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive-care and critical-care units, this course is for you!

Pre-requisite for ACLS: a current Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC) BLS for Healthcare Provider (C) card.

How am I evaluated?

To successfully complete this course, you must complete the ACLS Skills Test and achieve a minimum grade of 84 percent on the (open book) written evaluation.

Course Overview

Overview:
• Basic life-support skills, including effective chest compressions, use of a bag-mask device and an automated external defibrillator (AED)
• Recognition and early management of respiratory and cardiac arrest using a manual defibrillator and equipment commonly found on a crash cart
• Recognition and early management of peri-arrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia
• Management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and stroke
• Airway management
• Related pharmacology
• Effective resuscitation team dynamics and leadership

To successfully complete this course:
• Students must pass a written exam and practical skills test.

After successfully completing this course, you’ll receive:
• Official ACLS Provider Completion Card from the Heart & Stroke Foundation Of Canada (2 year validity).
• Eligibility for CME credits: 0.5 Mainpro credits per hour of participation (College of Family Physicians of Canada).
